Private Security to Counter Terrorism Successes and Problems

Terrorism is a global security concern for individuals, organizations and governments. The controversy that surrounds the definition of terrorism has substantially affected global counterterrorism efforts. The international community has not been able to come up with a universal and legal definition of terrorism. Counter terrorism measures include the deployment of Private security systems.  This paper will discuss successes and problems with private security in the war on terrorism.

Private security refers to private arrangements to prevent, respond, scuttle, or act on terrorism activities. The main objectives of private counterterrorism activities are to protect people and infrastructure, mitigate the impacts of terrorist attacks, prevent radicalization, and create intelligence for information gathering. Private security can successfully reinforce international efforts to fight against terrorism through coordinated efforts to block financial and economic resources from reaching terrorist groups. This is especially important because terrorist groups are well organized in terms of mobilizing resources. Physical security is important especially when it comes to scanning personal items carried in and out of corporate environments. Private security is also successful in preventing customer intimidation in corporations and prevention of arson, which are forms of terrorism. It is evident that private security in conjunction with the government has played a big role in transforming security situation in engineering and construction industries.

However, despite these successes, private security is associated with many problems. First, there is no link between government security agencies and the private security sector. Moreover, the lack of a uniform security system that supplements government efforts has posed a big challenge for the fight against terrorism. It is clear that the battle against terrorism require concerted efforts between the government security agencies and private security providers. In addition, non-governmental organizations and citizens need to participate in ensuring security and freedom for all.

Conclusion
Private security has a critical role in the fight against security. It is important for the government agencies link with each other and partner with private security systems to counter terrorism activities. It is also imperative to note that terrorism is changing rapidly and this calls for effective prevention and response security strategies. The international community must also come up with a universal policy and definition on terrorism.
