Early History of American Law Enforcement
The ability of a country to establish and maintain an effective law enforcement system is the main outline towards creating the correct environment for social-cultural, political and economic development in a nation. The current highly rated United States law enforcement system is largely credited from its traditional roots that gave it the necessary impetus with strong orientation towards perfection and people orientation. It is from this consideration that this paper evaluates state police agencies as a key aspect in the early American law enforcement history.
The need for state police agencies
19th century in the United States was characterized by strong reorganization in the law enforcement sector after the nation declared its independence in 1776. The need for state police therefore emerged from the inherent demand to maintain greater control and facilitate strong reorientation of the nation towards addressing its own issues (Robert and Deena, 2005). Though the British government relinquished the command of the forces, the state police agencies were largely defined by its model. Use of the local police agencies was considered being more effective as it would be located in the state as opposed to being a national operation.
Duties of the state police agencies
In his view, Friedman (2005) indicated that United States during the 19th century was a highly polarized nation as people were torn between the immediate acquired freedom and how to exercise it. As a result, the Sheriffs were greatly overwhelmed and could not easily control the people in their regions. Consequently, the state police agencies establishment was just timely and provided all the security related services outside the Sheriffs consideration (Kermit and David, 2002). Particularly, the state police agencies assisted in addressing the rising levels of crime in the major cities while further creating a platform for town expansion. As cities further developed with more people increasing in search for employments in the industries, state police further facilitated the needed security.
Latter development of the police agencies
The establishment of state police agencies as Larry and Roger (2006) indicate acted as the main mantle towards further developments in the forces. As Larry and Roger (2006) continue to say, the state law enforcement agencies workload became so expansive mainly due to economic progression supported by the burgeoning industries. By the third decade of the 20th century, every state had some form of state police agency that continued being branched to fit their different demands. One of the major credits that have been given to the state police agencies is the establishment of the need for strong professionalism and reforms that resulted to emphasis of high moral character and further efficacy in the management. Besides, further laws were established to harmonize states department of correction, conservation officers and even water police that gave the central administration holistic control of their states (Chris, 2007). It is from these units that later federal law enforcement agencies were molded.
Conclusion
It is from the above discussion that this paper supports the thesis statement, the ability of a country to establish and maintain an effective law enforcement system is the main outline towards creating the correct environment for social-cultural, political and economic development in a nation. The law enforcement prior to the state police agencies were not just chaotic but employed with little professionalism. The demand and application of the state law enforcement policies therefore provided the link between the colonial system and the new system that was further molded to create the current highly effective system in the United States.
