Conflict theory or Consensus Theory

Looking at these two theories, Conflict theory and Consensus Theory, it is easy to identify their differences. Conflict theory views society being divided into two or more groups with competing ideas and values wherein the group with most power makes the laws and controls the society while consensus theory states that laws are a result of, and a reflection of the general agreement in society where the views of right and wrong influence the laws and rules which govern the society. (See, 2004, p.31).

Given this two statements of definitions of the two theories, I see myself as a believer of both theories. Thus why the two and not just one If one would observe the society today, one could see that neither particular solution nor theory could solve the problems. So as a criminologist, I must observe and scrutinize the things at hand. Being a believer in both, this would give me the understanding why criminals tend to act that way and can help find for solutions.

Sticking to just one theory closes our minds to the possibility of other explanations and so the problem or case remains unresolved. Believing in this two would make way for a just look at the different things and avoid discrimination.
