Criminology Discussion

Criminology involves the study of different sorts of crimes, what causes them and the possible solutions. In the desire to solve crime, sociologists have developed theories to explain causes of crime, its state and possible solutions to the particular crimes in the society.

Conflict theory of crime shows the causes of crime to be due to competition for power, economic status, and social status. In contrast, consensus theory supports crime solution through the State by development of common laws that govern the society.

I would prefer being a consensus theorist. I believe that crime is not only caused by the state of desperation found among the weak in the society. Besides, criminals are not always low class earners. Criminals may be rich but they commit crimes for prestige or due to malice.

Consensus theory deals with devising crime solution through the formation of a stable society. The formulation of appropriate laws is seen as the focal point from which stability in the society is obtained. After the formation of a stable society, the theory further advocates for the maintenance of the new state so as to tame crime (Walklate, 2007).

I believe in consensus theory of criminology because it seeks to rationally connect the rich to the poor and the leaders to the led. People ought to coexist regardless of their social and economic status in the society. State mediation to conflict solution enhances unity and justice thus controlling crime.
In fact, law enforcement via consensus theory is useful in taming crime.
