The Impact of Parole

The use of parole in the different justice systems around the world differ in how they look at things and what benefits will the system receive from the said parole program. In Australian Criminal Justice System there is a debate whether parole is overly used or is seldom used provided the advantages and the disadvantages in this system. Ellis and Marshall (2000), in their study have defined parole as any system of early release from prison which is discretionary (p.300).

Thus with this given, the offender is given a chance to start anew under the supervision of a parole officer  and the individuals who asses this system from their own view,  argue whether such system  is effective or not given the different situations wherein persons in parole have positive changes or might have re-offended. Several believe that those on parole will have the chances of reoffending more than those who have served their sentence fully.

Looking at the concern of the country and those involved, directly and indirectly, parole system has been under fire as to its ability to change offenders. However, Ellis and Marshall (2000) found out that despite the concerns of re-offending, there is in fact a reduction. More so, the said reduction was also observed  in the predicted reconviction rates for higher risk prisoners compared to lower risk prisoners. (p.313)

With this given study and results, it can be said the parole truly does offer offenders a chance to change and thus lower the said crimes committed by them. It must be noted also that the effort must come from both the parole officer and those parolees so that a positive change and result will be attained.
